Dear Pine Strawberry Elementary School Families.

After a great deal of consideration the Pine Strawberry School will be replacing our Annual Student Water Day with an alternative activity, due to the current water crisis happening in our communities.  The School respects the need to conserve water, as well as, help our student understand that we are responsible for protecting Pine & Strawberry’s finite resources.  We will still be celebrating another year of student success with an activity and BBQ.

Dear Parents/Guardians, 


Attached you will find the proposed calendar for the next school year. As you can see we are proposing a five day a week schedule with every Friday becoming a half day release. We are seeking your input on this change prior to implementation. This calendar is still in the design phase therefore we need input prior to implementation. WHEREAS, the Governor of the State of Arizona has closed all Arizona schools through March 27, 2020; and

WHEREAS, Pine Strawberry Elementary School District No. 12 of Gila County, Arizona (“District”) has determined that it is in the District’s best interest to close the school to assist in the containment of a potential outbreak of COVID19; and

WHEREAS, the Governing Board has authority pursuant to A.R.S. § 15-806(B) to authorize school closure due to widespread illness; and 

WHEREAS, the Superintendent has authority pursuant to Governing Board Policies EBCD, its accompanying regulation and Governing Board Policy ID to close schools in an emergency; and 

WHEREAS, the Governing Board finds as that it is in the best interest of the District and its community to close the school listed below and to carry out the actions listed below in order to prevent the spread of a pandemic; and

WHEREAS, the Governing Board finds that it is in the best interest of the District and serves a public purpose to continue to pay its employees for the time period of the school closure in order to maintain order in the community, reduce employee turnover, allow employees to care for the needs of their families, meet its contractual obligations and increase morale for District employees during a time of national crisis. 

NOW, THEREFORE be it resolved by the Governing Board of Pine Strawberry Elementary School District No. 12 of Gila County, Arizona that:

Section 1.    The Governing Board authorizes the closure of the following school: 

            Pine Strawberry Elementary School 

    Section 2.    The Governing Board intends to close the school listed above until March 27, 2020, at which time the Board will reassess the potential outbreak of COVID19 and any public safety concerns.

    Section 3.    The Superintendent is authorized to continue regular payroll expenses for all employees.  Non-essential employees will be reassigned to home. Essential employees will be required to work.   Hourly employees who are deemed essential and required to work will be paid at time and a half.  All employees shall remain on call and available to report to work.

    Section 4.    The Governing Board authorizes the Superintendent to work with local and state authorities to maintain the minimum number of hours of instruction as required by A.R.S. § 15-901 and to create a corresponding change to the school calendar if necessary.

Section 5.    The Governing Board authorizes the Superintendent to execute all requisite documents to apply to the Arizona Department of Education for excuse of students from school attendance because of school closure pursuant to A.R.S. § 15-806(B).  The Superintendent is authorized to continue the dates of school closure if necessary.

Section 6.    The Governing Board authorizes the Superintendent to execute any further documentation to effectuate this resolution, including but not limited to any requisite notices required by the Arizona Department of Education or local/state health authorities.

    Passed and adopted this 18th day of March, 2020.


All children 0-18 years old are eligible to receive a free breakfast and lunch, under the National School Lunch Program.  Beginning March 23rd children/families can pick up meals from the Ramada near the soccer field, from 9-11 AM, Monday through Friday, until schools are back in session.  We ask that parents and students remain in their vehicle, in an effort to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

The Arizona Department of Education will be working with schools who intend to continue their meal service programs for children during the time schools are closed due to COVID-19. ADE has received approval from the USDA Food and Nutrition Service to waive the congregate meal requirement of the meal service programs.

On March 14, 2020, FNS granted ADE’s request for non-congregate feeding, as well ADE’s request to serve meals at school sites through the SSO and SFSP during unanticipated school closures associated with the novel coronavirus.

  • FNS granted a waiver of the congregate feeding requirement for approved SSO and SFSP sponsors in good standing through June 30, 2020, or upon expiration of the federally declared public health emergency, whichever is earlier.

  • This flexibility allows for approved sponsors to provide meals to be taken and consumed offsite, to allow for social distancing during the novel coronavirus.

  • FNS waived the requirement that school meal operations must be served at a non-school site during unanticipated school closure. Waiving this requirement will allow food service staff to prepare meals on school sites for non-congregate consumption during unanticipated school closures that occur due to the coronavirus.

  • Schools must be “area eligible” to provide meals. Schools must also make a public announcement regarding their food service plans.

ADE expects to work with additional districts and their meal programs starting this week (March 15, 2020). Through this website and e-mails to district and charter leaders, ADE will provide ongoing information regarding the availability of meals at schools and community locations.
